Common Dog Health Issues

The six issues US vets see most often — and what to watch for at home.

Skin Allergies

Itching, redness, and recurring infections. Causes range from fleas to food and environmental allergens.

Signs to watch

  • Constant scratching
  • Hot spots
  • Recurring ear infections

What to do

Vet visit for allergy workup; consider diet trial.

Ear Infections

Especially common in floppy-eared breeds. Often secondary to allergies.

Signs to watch

  • Head shaking
  • Odor
  • Brown discharge

What to do

Schedule vet exam — never insert anything into the ear canal.

Dental Disease

Affects 80% of dogs over age 3. Leads to tooth loss and systemic illness if ignored.

Signs to watch

  • Bad breath
  • Tartar buildup
  • Reluctance to chew

What to do

Annual dental cleaning + daily brushing.

Obesity

Over half of US dogs are overweight, shortening lifespan and worsening joint disease.

Signs to watch

  • No visible waist
  • Ribs not easily felt

What to do

Measure portions, reduce treats, increase activity.

GI Upset (Vomit/Diarrhea)

Often from dietary indiscretion; rarely serious if short-lived.

Signs to watch

  • Loose stool
  • Vomiting once or twice
  • Reduced appetite

What to do

Bland diet 24h; vet if it persists or worsens.

Arthritis

Common in older and large breeds. Manageable with the right plan.

Signs to watch

  • Stiffness
  • Slow to rise
  • Less play

What to do

Vet exam, weight management, joint supplements, possibly NSAIDs.
