Dog Training Programs

An overview of training options, what to expect, and how to pick the right fit for your dog.

Program types

  • Group classes: Affordable, great for socialization and basic obedience. Look for CCPDT-certified trainers.
  • Private in-home: Best for specific behavior issues like reactivity, separation anxiety, or aggression.
  • Online courses: Flexible and scalable for foundational skills. Less effective for serious behavior issues.
  • Board-and-train: Intensive 2–4 week stays. Quality varies widely — ask to observe before booking.
  • Day-training: Trainer works with your dog while you're at work; you get coaching sessions on weekends.

Choose a positive-reinforcement trainer

Modern dog training evidence strongly favors reward-based methods. Avoid trainers who use shock collars, prong collars, or "dominance" language — these approaches are linked to increased fear and aggression.

Certifications to look for

  • CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer)
  • KPA-CTP (Karen Pryor Academy)
  • IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants)
  • Veterinary behaviorist (DACVB) for severe issues
