Traveling With Your Dog
Plan ahead so trips are safe and low-stress for everyone.
Car travel
- Always restrain your dog — crash-tested crate, harness with seatbelt clip, or a barrier.
- Never let your dog ride in a truck bed or with their head out the window at high speeds.
- Stop every 2–3 hours for water and potty breaks.
- Never leave a dog in a parked car, even briefly — temperatures rise fast.
Air travel
- Small dogs (~20 lb or less) can usually fly in cabin in an airline-approved carrier.
- Larger dogs fly cargo — research airline policies carefully; some restrict brachycephalic breeds.
- Get a vet health certificate (typically required within 10 days of travel).
- Avoid sedation unless your vet specifically recommends it for that flight.
Hotels & rentals
- Confirm the pet policy and fees in writing before booking.
- Bring a familiar bed or blanket so your dog has a "safe" spot.
- Never leave a dog alone in a hotel room unless they're crate-trained and calm.
Pre-trip checklist
- Updated ID tag with cell number (not home phone)
- Microchip information current
- Vaccination records (paper copy)
- Medications + a few days' extra
- Familiar food, treats, bowl, leash, poop bags
