New Dog Owner Guide

A practical 30-day plan for first-time owners. Build a routine, establish trust, and avoid early mistakes.

Week 1: Decompress

Keep the environment calm. Limit visitors. Stick to one room or area at first. Feed the same food they were eating, then transition gradually over 7–10 days. Start short, positive crate sessions. Don't expect "perfect" behavior — your dog is processing huge change.

Week 2: Build routine

Set consistent meal, walk, and potty times. Begin name recognition and basic cues (sit, come). Book your first vet visit. Start short walks in low-traffic areas to build confidence.

Week 3: Expand the world

Introduce new environments slowly — different streets, the park at quiet hours, friends' houses. Begin a puppy or basic obedience class. Continue rewarding calm behavior.

Week 4: Settle in

By now your dog knows the routine and house rules. Personality starts to emerge. Address any persistent issues (resource guarding, leash pulling, separation anxiety) with a positive-reinforcement trainer.

Common first-month mistakes

  • Too many visitors in week 1
  • Changing food too quickly
  • Skipping the crate (it's a critical safety and training tool)
  • Punishing accidents instead of rewarding successes
  • Delaying socialization until "fully vaccinated" (puppies have a critical socialization window from 8–16 weeks)
